Northland Pioneer College will hold auditions for the spring production of Steel Magnolias on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, from 7:00 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center located on the Snowflake/Taylor—Silver Creek Campus, 1611 S. Main St. Callbacks will be Thursday, January 16.
Written by Robert Harling, Steel Magnolias explores the friendship of six Southern women who regularly frequent a small-town Louisiana beauty salon. Set in the 1980s, the heartwarming story unfolds through funny and emotionally charged conversations that reveal their personal struggles, joys, and resilience. The story focuses on the women, including Shelby, a young bride with a serious health condition, and her strong-willed mother, M’Lynn. Together, the group navigates love, loss, and the complexities of life. The play celebrates the strength of female friendship and community with sharp wit and deep emotional resonance.
NPC Faculty in Theatre Carson Saline will produce and direct the show. Auditions are open to everyone. You do not need to be an NPC student to participate. Those who wish to audition should prepare two contrasting contemporary monologues in the style of Steel Magnolias. Each monologue should be about one minute in duration and no longer than a minute and a half. “I encourage those who are interested in a role to choose material that is similar to the character experience or dramatic arc of the character or characters you are most interested in playing in this show,” explained Saline. “It is important to tailor your monologue choice to the role you want so that the panel of judges has a better chance of ‘seeing’ you in a role for this show.” Appointments to audition must be made online at www.npc.edu/auditions.
If cast, participants must register for SPT 199 (Play Production Workshop, one credit) Rehearsals will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:30 PM to 10:00 PM until March 17, and will meet nightly Mon-Fri until the production’s opening.
Steel Magnolias will be performed at NPC’s Performing Arts Center in Snowflake, AZ, running from April 4 to April 12, 2025.
