The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree is geared toward students who want to finish their studies and move directly into employment. The AAS prepares you for the workforce in a variety of fields like automotive technology, computer technology, nursing, cosmetology and many more (complete program list). Programs are based on skills achievement, and many have affiliations with external accrediting agencies and national professional organizations that not only demonstrate the programs’ currency but also increase your employability options. The career benefits of the AAS degree are significant and can give you a distinct edge when applying for jobs and securing your path to a solid economic future.
Most AAS degree areas offer lower level certificate options:
- The Certificate of Applied Science (CAS) focuses on employment skills to prepare you for your career in a selected field. However, rather than taking the full spectrum of general education courses required to earn an AAS degree, the CAS requires a specified minimum number of credits in your area of subject specialization and usually one mathematics course and one English course. This certificate provides you with the basic knowledge appropriate for the selected occupational field.
- The Certificate of Proficiency (CP) offers students highly focused skills training or re-training in selected occupational programs. By earning the CP you often can move toward testing and certification from national agencies in your field of choice. The certificate is a demonstration of learned skills in specific job areas when seeking employment in your career field.

General Studies Degree
The Associate of General Studies degree is designed for those who wish to continue their personal development through the equivalent of two years of post-high school education but are not planning to transfer to a four-year college or university, or to prepare for a vocational career. It is an alternative degree meant to (1) offer a distinct and innovative degree alternative, (2) provide tangible recognition to the concept that education is a lifelong process, and/or (3) enable a student to pursue a special occupational field that has both lower division and upper division options. Students seeking a general studies degree must meet with an NPC Academic Advisor to select and design a program of courses that will best meet the student's needs. Students having already completed associate or higher degrees will not be considered for this program. See the NPC College Catalog for complete degree course requirements.
For detailed degree and program information see the current college catalog. Always speak to an NPC academic advisor to ensure you are taking the correct courses. Check sheets for all of these degrees are available on the academic advising webpage, under the blue tab in the top right corner labeled "checksheets."
