Eleven first and second-year students enrolled in Northland Pioneer College’s (NPC) Associate Degree in Nursing program received $1,000 each to assist them with tuition, books, and other expenses related to their educational goals for the Fall 2024 semester. Now in its tenth year, this scholarship program is made possible through the generous backing of the Summit Healthcare Foundation. “We at NPC Friends and Family have been so fortunate for the unstinting support of Summit Healthcare and their sponsorship, not only of this scholarship but of many of our events since 2014,” noted NPC Friends and Family Executive Director Betsy Wilson. “We simply could not accomplish all we do without them. They are behind our most successful fundraisers, and are true partners of the NPC nursing program, not only through this scholarship, but by providing NPC students with opportunities to complete their compulsory clinical rotations in a first-rate hospital setting.” Ten scholarships were provided by Summit; an eleventh was awarded by NPC Friends and Family, based on the quality of the application.
Wilson applauded the diligence of the members of the scholarship review committee, who volunteered their time to analyze and score the applications that met the qualifications for review. The application process was rigorous and included an essay that required respondents to describe their commitment to and their qualifications for careers in the healthcare field, as well as their feelings about the role a nurse plays within both the hospital setting and in the community. Each applicant was also required to obtain two letters of reference. Scores were based on academic achievement and need and on how thoroughly each applicant replied to the essay topics and whether or not the references they provided validated the applicant’s responses. Wilson praised the applicants. “Their essays conveyed a true passion for the nursing profession,” Wilson notes. “It is not just a career for these students; it is a calling.”
Since 2014, Summit Healthcare has provided over 100 nursing students with scholarship assistance through NPC Friends and Family. These scholarships not only help these students advance their educational goals but also improve the quality of life in our communities. The 2024 recipients of the Summit Healthcare Foundation Nursing Scholarship are Sara Chevalier and LeAnnza Forsythe of Show Low, Savannah Henderson and Jaden Martinez of Snowflake, Amanda Reeves, Bryson Sheppard, and Shanae Canales of Winslow, Serphina Manygoats of Indian Wells, Bobbie Benkert of Payson, Ashton Reed of Springerville, and Makenna Mortenson of Taylor.
