Thirty-eight new firefighters complete NPC’s fire science program

2024 NPC Fire Science Completers — NPC's Fire Science graduates from NAVIT, and the Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 NPC academies.

White Mountain communities have thirty-eight more firefighters ready to hit the fire lines and assist with emergency incidents in our area. Graduates from the Northern Arizona Vocational Institute of Technology (NAVIT) and NPC’s Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 fire science academies were honored during a ceremony held on Tuesday, May 14, 2024, at the Performing Arts Center in Snowflake, AZ.

Family, friends, NPC administration, instructors, and staff gathered to celebrate the new firefighters who earned certificates for completing the demanding program.

Former Fire Chief Brian Savage, of Timber Mesa Fire and Medical Department provided the invocation. The guest speaker, Chief Robert “Bob” Garvin of the Clay Springs/Pinedale Fire District addressed the students and those gathered. Relating some of his own experiences, Garvin emphasized the importance of teamwork and finding inspiration. “Know that it doesn’t matter what your rank is, you can inspire others through your example and your energy,” he said. Garvin instructed the new graduates to “grow, learn, and model the behaviors you wish to see in others. To practice kindness, respect, and keep an open mind.” He continued, “The more struggle you face, the more compassion you develop. The more connected to others, you will become.” He explained, “Look to connect with others more than you seek to be better than others.” Garvin also stressed the importance of continued learning and told the students to read daily. He said, “Take this new career but don’t let it become your life. Find a hobby. Spend time with your family. You will be 100% better for it.”

In closing, Garvin emphasized what he deemed most important. “Use integrity in your lives, on the scene, and in your life,” he said. Congratulations firefighters.”
