Why should I consider a volunteer opportunity?
- Serve your community.
- Develop new skills (i.e. public speaking).
- Explore occupational interests.
- Build résumé experiences.
- Get your foot in the door.
Should I volunteer in the same field I plan to study or work in?
- Getting experience in the field you plan to study or work in can be beneficial. It demonstrates to schools and employers that you have explored the line of work and you know what the job entails.
- Participating in volunteer experiences that are unrelated to career interests can also be useful. It helps you develop an understanding of a field and encourages you to become a well-rounded individual.
Make your volunteer experience rewarding for both you and your employer:
- Be professional. Dressing appropriately is only part of the equation for success; maintaining a positive attitude and interacting with others respectfully are also important. Treat this opportunity as you would a job.
- Be inquisitive. Ask questions; this is your chance to learn from someone who works in the field. What kind of training do I need to work in the field? What are your favorite things about the job? What do you not like about your job?
- Challenge yourself. Stretch your limitations by working in environments or with people you wouldn’t ordinarily do. For example, if you need to practice your public speaking, volunteer to do a presentation at a formal meeting.
- Enjoy yourself. This is a learning opportunity; have fun with it. If you find yourself dreading the time you spend volunteering, reflect upon why you are unhappy in the position.
