Auditions for Northland Pioneer College’s (NPC) production of the Broadway musical, Little Women, will be held on Tuesday, August 23 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center located on the Snowflake/Taylor – Silver Creek Campus, 1611 S. Main St.
Little Women is based on novelist Louisa May Alcott’s life and follows the adventures of sisters Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy March. Jo (a writer), aspires to get her stories published, but when publishers are not interested, her friend, Professor Bhaer, tells her she must do better and “write more for herself.” Jo begrudgingly takes his advice and weaves together a story about her and her sisters’ experiences while growing up in Civil War America.
“We are excited to bring live theatrical and musical productions back to NPC,” states Faculty in Theatre Carson Saline. This is the first live show produced at the college post-COVID. “Auditions are open to everyone,” states Saline, who is also the production director. Little Women features plenty of great opportunities for actors and singers ranging in age from teenagers to 60 years old.
The show is being produced through a licensing agreement with Music Theatre International (MTI). “Little Women embodies the complete theatrical experience, guaranteeing a night filled with laughter, tears, and a lifting of the spirit,” MTI explains in their online synopsis. “The powerful score soars with the sounds of personal discovery, heartache, and hope – the sounds of a young America finding its voice.”
Those who audition should come prepared to sing two contrasting song cuts of a minute or less. Music selections should be in the style of the show. An accompanist will be provided, and performers must bring sheet music in the appropriate key, with cuttings clearly marked. Acappella and recorded accompaniments will not be permitted. Performers should also refrain from singing anything from the score. Appointments to audition must be made online at www.npc.edu/auditions. See the website for more information including descriptions of the production’s main characters and tips on how to make a strong audition.
This production of Little Women is based on the book by Allan Knee and the music is produced by Jason Howland. Lyrics are courtesy of Mindi Dickstein. Performances will be held at NPC’s Performing Arts Center in Snowflake, AZ, and dates and showtimes will be announced soon.
