Pedal the Petrified 2025 is a non-competitive cycling tour ride that takes place in the beautiful Petrified Forest National Park to raise funds for NPC student scholarships.
About Pedal the Petrified 2025: Registrants can choose their ride option: a 50 km (approximately 31 miles) one-way trip, from the north entrance of Petrified Forest National Park to Rainbow Forest in the south, with a free shuttle for themselves and their bikes back to the ride start, or a 100 km (approximately 62 miles) round trip.
Each registered rider receives admission to the park, a ride tee-shirt, and access to all support, sag stops, and shuttle service. Five sag stops, located approximately five miles apart throughout the route, provide water (please bring your own bottles) and healthy snacks. You can download a ride description below, with information about elevation, elevation changes, and distances between stops.
It's a truly singular experience! Take your time, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the park, from the picturesque Painted Desert on the north end to the fascinating petrified wood in the south. Several sag stops feature short walks that take you right into the setting. Sag stop volunteers will be happy to mind your bike and take photos of you and your ride partners!

RIDE DATE: Saturday, September 27, 2025
LIMIT: 250 Riders
COST: $135/rider - includes rider t-shirt
LOCATION: Petrified Forest National Park (park entrance 26 miles east of Holbrook, Arizona on Interstate 40, mile post 311)
RIDE OPTIONS:(See ride map and description for details.)
- Metric Century: 100 km/63-mile round trip through the park. Ride starts at 7:00 a.m. at Painted Desert Inn/Kachina Point, and finishes at Painted Desert Inn/Kachina Point.
- Metric Half-Century: 50 km/31-mile one-way trip to Rainbow Forest with transportation back to the start at Painted Desert Inn/Kachina Point. Ride starts at 7:00 a.m. at Painted Desert Inn/Kachina Point and ends at Rainbow Forest.
PLEASE NOTE: For 2025 only, we’ll be parking everyone at Hozho Point, which is about a half-mile past Painted Desert Inn/Kachina Point. All riders, whether on the full or half-ride, will start at Painted Desert Inn/Kachina Point. Full-riders will also end their round-trip at Painted Desert Inn/Kachina Point; half-riders will ride to Rainbow Forest, then be shuttled back to the parking lot at Hozho Point. Note: Because the starting point is about one mile into the park from our usual start at Tiponi Point, we’ve added some options to allow you to notch up those distances (either the 50k one-way or the 100k round trip) in your ride journals. You will need to ride the Newspaper Rock spur (see map) and the Jasper Forest spur (see map) for the 50k distance; for 100k riders, you’ll need to ride both spurs, both ways! This will add to the beautiful scenery and great National Park experience you love!

PURPOSE OF RIDE: Our goal is to raise at least $50,000 for NPC student scholarships by asking riders to seek sponsorships and/or donations to NPC Friends & Family.
RULES:
- All participants must sign a legal waiver in the registration process.
- Due to the limited number of riders, we are NOT able to give refunds or allow registration transfers.
- Children ages 10 and over may participate, if they are accompanied at all times by a designated adult. Children under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian sign a waiver.
- NO CHILDREN OR PETS are permitted to ride in bike-mounted carriers or bike trailers.
- NO THROTTLE-EQUIPPED E-BIKES ARE PERMITTED. For pedal-assist e-bikes, please contact Betsy Wilson and Karen Zimmerman at NPCFF@npc.edu.
- All participants are required to wear a bike helmet. If you arrive with no helmet, you will not be permitted to ride. This is a park requirement!
- Your participation in this ride will only be reserved upon complete payment of the bike rider fee.
- All participants must obey all traffic laws and Petrified Forest National Park regulations. All roads in the park will still be open to traffic, so riders are to ride in SINGLE FILE, except when passing another rider.
- No littering.
- Shuttle service will be available for riders who participate in the 50km/31-mile ride back to the north entrance.
- Emergency services will be available within the park. All riders are expected to accommodate their own non-emergency medical needs.
- Each SAG stop will have water and snacks available. Riders should bring refillable bottles for water. Riders are expected to accommodate their own dietary restrictions and bring preferred food/drink items with them.
- The Pedal the Petrified bike ride will run as scheduled, rain or shine. No refunds or vouchers will be provided due to inclement weather. Participants are responsible for preparing for and reacting to weather conditions.
- Riders are responsible for their own safety.
- A pre-ride check-in event will take place on Friday, September 26, 2025 at the Northland Pioneer College Painted Desert Campus, 2251 E. Navajo Blvd., Holbrook, AZ 86025. Riders may pick up their ride packets between 3:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. MST.
