When NPC District Governing Board Member Charles Prescott “Pres” Winslow passed away suddenly in June 2016, he had no way of knowing the magnitude of his legacy or what his life meant to those who knew him.

Within weeks of his passing, friends from as far back as his high school graduating class of 1961 began sending memorial donations to be added to a scholarship in homage to the years he spent volunteering with students at Winslow High School and Northland Pioneer College, helping them to make their dreams of post-secondary education a reality.

One high school friend reached out to her peers on social media, and as the word spread, the fund grew. Pres' family worked with NPC Friends and Family to establish a scholarship that provides $1,000 each semester to a graduate of Winslow High School attending Northland Pioneer College. The first three recipients of this award, which was first bestowed in the Fall 2016 semester, have been students whose lives Pres himself touched through his volunteer work.

His family intended that the scholarship be awarded as long as funds were available. As other gifts and tributes continued to pour in, a surprise December 2017 grant from the Smart Family Foundation of Lisle, Illinois, will assure that the Pres Winslow Memorial Scholarship Fund goes on in perpetuity.

The $50,000 grant, along with proceeds from the sale of an exquisite Navajo Rug, and other end-of-year donations brought the fund to over $70,000 by the close of 2017. NPC Friends and Family will use this as principal for an endowment that will provide for the Pres Winslow Memorial Scholarship far into the foreseeable future.

An endowed scholarship is a permanent fund in which the principal remains intact and invested at all times. Scholarships are awarded from the allocated income earned on the principal investment in accordance with the policies of NPC Friends and Family.

The Pres Winslow Memorial Scholarship was initially created to assist only graduates of Winslow High School who are degree-seeking at Northland Pioneer College. But with the establishment of the endowment, the scholarship will now be available each fall semester to a WHS graduate, and in the spring semester to any NPC student enrolled in six or more credits and working toward a degree.

“I can think of no finer way to honor Pres than to endow a scholarship in his name,” says NPC Friends and Family executive director Betsyann Wilson. “He had the heart of a servant, combined with the wisdom and knowledge to mentor students who sought to find their way into post-secondary education. It is no overstatement that his influence made a tremendous difference to many students who would not have considered college an option without his encouragement and guidance. I think he would be humbled and gratified to know that he was held in such esteem that his loved ones have chosen to continue his work in this way.”
