SPRINGERVILLE — Learn the fundamentals of weaving or bring your projects and get help from experienced weaver Carol Farnsworth during Weaving Practicums at Northland Pioneer College’s Springerville/Eagar Center, 940 E. Maricopa in Springerville.

The Practicums are designed for beginners or those wanting to learn a new weaving technique. Through lecture, demonstration and hands-on activity you'll be able to plan and execute a chosen project. There is a $25 fee for the noncredit practicum. Students should bring their own supplies and loom, or a loom can be rented for an additional $15.

Farnsworth has scheduled two Practicums this fall: on September 8 and 9 (reference HCT 099x-45) or October 20 and 21 (reference HCT 099x-46), from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. “The Practicum is an informal class with many opportunities to learn from other students as well,” notes Farnsworth.

Farnsworth first learned to weave over 40 years ago in Finland as part of an exchange program. She has learned to raise her own fiber animals, shear them and process the fiber into yarn, dye it and then weave. “The entire process is an endlessly fascinating study,” commented Farnsworth. “The connection between modern textiles and pre-historic textiles adds depth to my studies.” She is always interested in new weaving techniques and available fibers and is eager to share this new information with students, something she has been doing for over 20 years.

Sign up for the Weaving Practicums at least three days before the class starts to ensure it is not canceled due to insufficient enrollment. Register at any NPC location during regular business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday, or 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays. NPC offices will be closed September 4 for Labor Day.
