Whether an afterschool activity for youth ages 6 to 16, or adults wanting to expand their musical knowledge, Dennis Kemp’s Basic Music and Guitar classes meet on Mondays and Wednesdays, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Choose from 10 lessons, March 20 through April 19 (reference MUS 099x-54) for $85, or 16 sessions, March 20 through May 10 (reference MUS 099x-59) for $135. Students must provide their own guitar.

Hands-on instruction for playing a guitar, understanding chord structure, scales, melody and other musical principles is provided in Gail Lynn’s Beginning Guitar workshop (MUS 099x-58), which is open to everyone 13-years-old and above. The class meets on Wednesdays, March 22 through May 10, from 6 to 8 p.m. The cost is $85. Students must bring their own instruments and purchase a required Guitar Method, Book I (ISBN: 0-959540-48-2), approximately $15.

“The class will emphasize basic chords and simple lead lines for enabling the student to quickly begin playing,” noted Lynn. You’ll learn open and bar chords, chord chart and note reading, picking, and strumming patterns. “The first hour will be used to learn notes; the second hour we’ll be playing chords.” No previous music theory or compositional skills are required.

Instructor Dennis Kemp is a multiple genre guitarist, from Bluegrass to Rock & Roll, Country Western to Mariachi. As a teen, he started his own rock & roll garage band, The Playboys, performing throughout his native Minnesota. More recently he played with Strings & Things, based at the Happy Trails Resort in Surprise, AZ, and at the annual international Mariachi Festivals in Rosarito, Mexico.

Lynn has been playing guitar since she was 15-years-old and has been giving private lessons since she was 21. She regularly performs at local coffee houses and has previously taught for NPC and in California.
