Machinal Performances • April 27, 28 & 29

NPC Performing Arts presents Machinal – a play by Sophie Treadwell loosely inspired by the sensational Ruth Snyder murder trial covered by journalist Treadwell that resulted in Snyder and her lover, Judd Gray, both being convicted and sentenced to the electric chair for killing Snyder's husband. Treadwell wrote Machinal, a powerful expressionist drama about the dependent status of women and the emotional torture of a loveless marriage. NPC's intriguing production will feature both a theatrical and cinematic approach to realizing the play's expressionistic style. The play, written in 1928, contains mild adult language and is produced through special arrangement with the Tucson Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church, which Treadwell entrusted in her will with collecting future royalties of her plays to benefit the education of Native American children.
